Just like an Aadhaar card, a PAN card is also the most important document to be submitted for income tax returns and related tasks. A PAN card is also required to open a bank account, buy a property or any other assets.

An applicant can apply for a PAN card either online or offline. The process to apply for a PAN card by using any of the ways might vary; however, the eligibility criteria for a PAN card and the documentation requirement remains the same.

Other than applying for a PAN card, there are two sources through which an applicant can apply for a PAN card: NSDL and UTIITSL. The steps in both of these portals might vary slightly.

How to apply for a PAN card online?

Following are the given steps to apply for a PAN card online-

Apply for PAN Card through NSDL

  • Visit the official website of NSDL, click on ‘Application Type’ on the next screen that appears
  • Choose the type of application you want to apply for (Form 49A- for Indian citizens), Form 49AA- for Foreign citizens)
  • Next, choose the category from the options available
  • Fill in your details carefully
  • Choose the title (out of Shri, Smt or Kumari) you want to reflect on your PAN card
  • Write your Last name/Surname, First name and Middle name ( if there is any)
  • Select your DOB/Incorporation/Formation date in the following format – DD/MM/YY
  • Write down your email address that is in use so that you don’t miss out on any PAN-card related information
  • Enter your current mobile number
  • Tick mark on the guidelines
  • Enter the CAPTCHA code and submit your application
  • Next, you will be redirected to the payment page where you need to make a payment of Rs. 93 for your PAN card. Rs. 864 is required to be paid for Form 49AA
  • Choose the payment method such as a credit card, debit card, net banking, cheque or DD
  • After the successful submission of your PAN card application, you will receive an acknowledgement number page. Take a printout and keep it safe with you for further use
  • Paste your passport size photograph on the acknowledgement paper, sign it with a black pen and send the acknowledgement receipt to the Income Tax Department. Along with the receipt, send your residential proof, identity proof or other support documents as requested, within 15 days from the date of the online application
  • After the successful validation of your documents, you will receive your PAN card number to your registered mobile number and email id

How to apply for a PAN card through NSDL offline?

To apply for a PAN card through NSDL, following are the steps an applicant needs to follow-

  • Log in to the official website of NSDL
  • Click on ‘Apply Online’ and download Form 49A, if you are an Indian Citizen, and/or Form 49AA, if you are a foreign citizen
  • Fill the form carefully and upload all the supporting documents along with a passport size photograph and pay the PAN card fee
  • Once done, take a printout of the 15-digit acknowledgement number and sign it
  • Attach the passport size photograph along with POI (Proof of Identity)/POA (Point of Address)
  • Now, send all the above documents to the NSDL office, along with the Demand Draft (in case you are paying through it) carefully
