A PAN card is one of the most important documents and carries equivalent importance as an Aadhaar card. It is a 10-digit alphanumeric number and is given to only those who are eligible to hold it. It is required to be submitted for filing IT returns, buying a new house/property or to open a bank account, etc.

There are two official platforms through which the applicant can apply for a PAN card, one is NSDL and the other is UTIITSL. Not just applying for a PAN card, through any of the given platforms, the applicant can also track the PAN card status, re-apply for a PAN card, link the Aadhaar card to the PAN card, download it, etc. In case, the applicant opts for a PAN card offline, he/she can do the same by connecting with the authorized PAN centre. The process to apply for a PAN card between both mediums might differ slightly; however, the documentation process remains the same.

How to Check PAN Status through Telephone?

The applicant can check the PAN card status through a call. All he/she requires is to follow the given instructions-

  • Call the TIN call centre on 020-27218080
  • Provide the 15-digit acknowledgement number to the executive
  • The executive will provide you with your PAN card status

How to Check PAN Card Status through SMS?

Other than checking the PAN card status by calling the official PAN official, there is another to check the PAN status, i.e- via SMS. for the same, the applicant is required to follow the given instructions carefully-

  • Send an SMS to NSDL PAN and 15-digit acknowledgement number to 57575
  • The applicant will be provided with the PAN card status via SMS

Who is Eligible for a PAN Card?

As per the clauses of the Income Tax Act, Indian residents under the following categories are eligible to hold a PAN card

  • Self-employed professionals or businessmen whose annual turnover is Rs. 5 lakh or more
  • Individuals who are liable to pay tax or who pay tax
  • Individuals who are into import and export activities
  • Registered associations, organizations, trusts

NRIs (Non-Residents of India), PIOs (Person of Indian Origin), OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India), cardholders as well as foreigners who come under the purview of the Income Tax Act of 1961 are eligible to apply for a PAN card. Besides, parents too on behalf of their minor can apply for a PAN card.

How to Apply for a PAN Card?

There are two ways to apply for a PAN card– online and offline. Follow the steps written below to apply for a PAN card-

Apply for a PAN Card Online

  • Visit the official web portal of NSDL or UTIITSL
  • Locate the PAN application form and duly fill it properly
  • Submit all the required documents with 2 passport size photographs
  • Pay the required fee
  • Your PAN card will be dispatched to your registered address within 15 days or according to the applicant’s communication address

Apply for a PAN Card Offline

  • Visit the PAN centre
  • Fill in the PAN application form with accurate information and submit 2 passport size photographs
  • Now, submit all the supporting documents, and processing fees along with the application
  • Your PAN card will be dispatched within a span of 15 days from the date of submission

Can I get two PAN cards?
It’s an offence to carry more than one PAN card. A penalty of Rs. 10,000 has to be paid by the applicant in case of having 2 or more PAN cards.
