List of Documents Required for Voter ID Card

What Documents Are Required for a Voter ID Card?

The Election Commission of India asks for three categories of proof when you fill Form 6. Each category has its own list of accepted documents. Missing even one category means your application is incomplete and will not move to verification.

Below is the full list under each head. You do not need every document in a category. One valid document per category is enough.

Proof of Identity

This proves you are who you say you are. The document must carry your photograph or your full name matching the name on Form 6.

Utility bills are accepted only if they are recent. An old bill with a past address will not help. Proof of Age

You must be at least eighteen years old on the qualifying date set by the Election Commission of India. The age proof confirms your date of birth.

How to Apply for a Voter ID Card Online

Applying online is faster than visiting an office, and you can do it from anywhere. Here are the steps.

1. Go to the official NVSP portal and click on the option to apply online.
2. Register a new account using your mobile number, email ID and basic details. If you already have an account, log in with your credentials.
3. Select Form 6 from the list of available forms.
4. Fill in your personal details: full name, date of birth, gender, father’s or mother’s or husband’s name, and current address.
5. Upload a recent passport-sized colour photograph. The file size and format requirements are shown on the form page.
6. Upload scanned copies of your proof of identity, proof of address and proof of age.
7. Review every field. A mismatch between the name on the form and the name on your documents is the most common reason for rejection.
8. Submit the form. Note down the reference number displayed on screen.

1. Collect a printed copy of Form 6 from the centre.
