Starting August 1, 2025, new UPI rules are kicking in—and if you’re a regular UPI user, this update is worth your attention. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is bringing in fresh limits aimed at reducing system load, cutting down on failed transactions, and improving reliability—especially during peak hours. While your everyday payments may stay unaffected, there will be changes in how often you can check your balance, refresh transaction status, and more. Curious what’s changing? Let’s break it down.
UPI to Limit Daily Balance Checks and Account Views
Starting next month, UPI app users can check their account balance only 50 times a day, and view linked bank accounts just 25 times a day. These daily caps are being introduced by NPCI to cut down on system traffic and prevent slowdowns or outages during peak usage.

Autopay Mandate Execution API
To improve efficiency and reduce pressure on the UPI system, NPCI is placing tighter controls around how Autopay mandates are executed. Instead of allowing unrestricted execution throughout the day, these transactions — like recurring bill payments, subscriptions, and EMIs — must now follow stricter timing and retry logic.
- Each mandate is allowed only 1 execution attempt, with up to 3 retries, based on its sequence number.
- NPCI may apply rate limiters to ensure fair usage and avoid spikes.
- PSPs are required to trigger these executions at a moderated TPS (transactions per second).
- All Autopay-related executions should be carried out during non-peak hours to ensure smoother performance and minimal disruption to real-time payments.
Though this adjustment works in the background, it’s aimed at delivering a more stable and responsive experience for users during high-traffic hours.
Peak hours refer to the time slots when UPI experiences the highest transaction load — specifically between 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM. All other times are considered non-peak hours. |
Are There Any Changes in UPI, UPI Lite, or UPI Autopay Limits?
If you’re wondering whether your UPI payment limits have changed, the short answer is: No, there are no changes in limits for UPI, UPI Lite, or UPI Autopay.
However, behind the scenes, NPCI has introduced system-level controls to improve efficiency and reduce failure rates during peak hours. But these don’t impact your actual spending limits.
