Registration of FASTag for Vehicle

If you own a four-wheeler, it is most likely that you would know of the FASTag and its importance. Well, there is no doubt in the fact that the benefits of having a FASTag on your vehicle are multifold. The Indian government has made it mandatory for all four-wheeler owners to have a FASTag fitted on their vehicles as a mandatory requirement.

Now, you’d think why has the government taken this action. There are multiple reasons behind it. Let’s take a look at some of them-

  • Using the FASTag technology, you will not have to lower the speed of your vehicle at the toll plazas. Since you can keep moving at the toll gates, without having to stop, your fuel and your time will be saved
  • Since the traffic does not have to stop or slow down, there is almost no congestion or traffic jam at the toll plazas
  • With the use of FASTag, you can enjoy the benefit of electronic payment, and a completely hassle-free driving experience throughout your journey; leaving the FASTag to take care of all your toll payments
  • If you use Paytm to make your FASTag payments, you will receive regular in-app notifications and SMSs every time you make a payment through FASTag. Moreover, you can also track your expenses in your Paytm passbook
  • The FASTag facility benefits the environment in the long run, as it reduces the use of paper and fuel
  • Regular travelers can apply to convert their monthly, regular passes into FASTag passes. There is an online application procedure for corporates and fleet owners to do the same
  • While various other digital wallets let you recharge your FASTag on your mobile phone in a matter of minutes; Paytm does not require you to do that either. All you need is some balance in your Paytm wallet and the toll tax amount will automatically be deducted from your wallet as and when you cross a toll plaza
  • Upon linking your FASTag account with the Paytm mobile application, you will be automatically notified of all the transactions and toll deductions. This will help you keep a track of the money that you have spent at toll plazas during your travel
  • A FASTag has a validity of 5 years
  • Registering for a FASTag involves a simple, and quick process

How to Register for FASTag?

One of the major benefits of FASTag is that it has long-term validity and involves a very simple registration process. Once installed, a FASTag remains valid for a time period of 5 years. You can register for a FASTag using both, online and offline methods.

Offline Registration of FASTag

To register for your FASTag offline, you need to follow the steps below-

  • Visit any of the POS (Point of Sale) terminals located at various toll plazas
  • Remember to carry all the required documents when you visit a POS for verification of your FASTag application
  • The issuing agency will then verify all your documents closely before accepting your application
  • After the registration of your vehicle for FASTag, a representative from the concerned issuing agency will fix the FASTag on your vehicle’s windshield

Online Registration of FASTag

If you buy a FASTag on online platforms such as Paytm, you would not be required to register your FASTag specifically. Your FASTag will automatically be registered on the platform. When you purchase a FASTag on Paytm, your tag will be pre-activated. All you have to do is stick it to the windscreen of your vehicle and you’ll be good to go!

Documents required for FASTag Registration

To apply for FASTag, you only need to submit your vehicle’s RC (Registration Certificate) and nothing else if you are KYC verified on Paytm or other mobile banking applications. However, if you are not KYC verified, and applying for FASTag for the first time, you need to submit the following documents-

  • Registration Certificate (RC)
  • KYC documents of your vehicle
  • PAN Card
  • Identity and Address Proof (any one of the following)
    • Driver’s License
    • Valid Passport (photo of its front page and the address page)
    • Voter’s ID Card
    • Aadhaar Card (including the address)

Registration of FASTag on Paytm

Once your FASTag registration is complete, your FASTag account will be created and it will automatically be linked to your Paytm wallet. This is because your FASTag-associated prepaid account is already linked to a bank account, you don’t specifically need to link your FASTag with a bank account. All you need to do is ensure that you are KYC-verified for your prepaid wallet account and that is it!

Using the Paytm wallet for your FASTag-related transactions will make it easier for you as you won’t have to recharge your FASTag again and again. All you need is balance in your Paytm wallet and the toll tax amount would directly be deducted from your wallet as and when you cross a toll plaza.

Having a single Paytm wallet for multiple needs will help you manage your balances and keep a detailed track of all your travel-related expenses, whether fuel, purchases at departmental stores, or expenses made at toll plazas.

Incomplete KYC FASTags to Be Deactivated After January 31, 2024

Starting from January 31, 2024, FASTags with incomplete KYC will be deactivated by banks, according to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). NHAI has introduced the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' initiative to improve the efficiency of the electronic toll collection system and facilitate smoother movement at toll plazas. This initiative discourages the use of a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or linking multiple FASTags to one vehicle. NHAI is urging FASTag users to complete the KYC process as per RBI guidelines by updating their latest FASTag. Users must ensure that their latest FASTag has completed KYC to avoid any inconvenience.
