How to cross a cheque

To cross a cheque, draw two parallel transverse lines across the face of the cheque, typically at the top-left corner. This instruction ensures the funds are credited only to a bank account and cannot be encashed over the counter. You can add specific instructions between the lines:
  • General Crossing: Leave the lines blank or add "& Co." to ensure the amount is paid only through a banker.
  • Account Payee: Write "A/c Payee Only" to ensure the funds are deposited exclusively into the named payee's account.
  • Special Crossing: Mention a specific bank's name to restrict payment to that institution.
