A UPI Reference Number (UTR) is a unique 12-digit number assigned to every UPI transaction, making it easy to identify and track payments. You can find the UTR in the Paytm app, on your payment receipt, or in your bank statement, and use it to verify transactions, track pending payments, request refunds, or resolve payment-related issues with your bank or Paytm.
Every UPI transaction is assigned a unique 12-digit UPI Reference Number (UTR), also known as the Unique Transaction Reference. This number is generated when a transaction is processed and acts as its unique identifier across the UPI ecosystem.
While you may not need it for everyday payments, the UTR becomes important when you’re tracking a pending transaction, verifying a payment, requesting a refund, or raising a complaint with your bank, Paytm, or NPCI. This guide explains what the UTR is, how it differs from a transaction ID, where to find it, and when you may need to use it.
What Exactly is a UPI Reference Number?
A UPI Reference Number (UTR) is a unique 12-digit numeric code generated for every UPI transaction, whether it’s successful, pending, or failed.
The UTR is recorded by the UPI system, your bank, the recipient’s bank, and the UPI app used for the transaction. Since every transaction has its own unique UTR, banks and payment service providers can quickly identify the exact payment whenever support or verification is required.
For example, if you contact customer support regarding a failed payment, providing the UTR allows them to locate the transaction much faster than searching by your name, phone number, payment amount, or transaction date.
The same UTR appears for both the sender and the receiver, making it a reliable way to verify that a payment was successfully processed.
Is the UTR the Same as the Transaction ID?
No. Although both appear on many payment receipts, they serve different purposes.
| Identifier | Purpose |
|---|---|
| UPI Reference Number (UTR) | A 12-digit number generated by the UPI system and recognised by banks, NPCI, and UPI apps. It is commonly used for tracking transactions and resolving payment issues. |
| Transaction ID | Generated by the UPI app (such as Paytm) to identify the payment within that app’s system. |
| Order ID | Generated by a merchant to link the payment to a specific purchase or order. |
If you’re contacting your bank, reporting a payment issue, or filing a complaint, the UPI Reference Number (UTR) is usually the most important identifier to share.
How Do You Find the UTR Number in Paytm?
You can find the UPI Reference Number in several places.
In the Paytm app
Step 1: Open the Paytm app.
Step 2: Tap Balance & History.
Step 3: Select the transaction you want to view.
Step 4: The transaction details screen displays the UPI Reference Number (UTR). You can copy it if needed.
On the payment confirmation screen
Immediately after completing a payment, the success screen displays the UTR along with the transaction details. If you share the payment receipt, the UTR is included as proof of payment.
In your bank statement
You can also find the UTR in your bank statement or passbook. It usually appears in the transaction narration alongside the UPI payment details.
This is particularly useful if you’ve changed phones, deleted the UPI app, or need to retrieve the reference number for an older transaction.
How Do You Track or Use a Transaction with the UTR?
The UTR isn’t something you enter into a public tracking website. Instead, it acts as the reference number used by banks, payment apps, merchants, and NPCI to identify a specific transaction.
Here are the most common situations where you’ll need it.
Tracking a pending or failed payment
If a payment is pending or has failed after your account was debited, raise a support request through your UPI app or contact your bank. Providing the UTR helps customer support locate the transaction quickly and check whether a reversal or refund has been initiated.
Verifying a payment
If someone says they’ve paid you, ask them to share the UTR instead of relying only on a payment screenshot. You can compare the reference number with your own transaction history or bank statement to confirm whether the payment has actually been received.
Raising a complaint
When reporting a transaction issue through your bank, Paytm, NPCI, or other official grievance channels, you’ll usually be asked for the UTR. Sharing it helps route your complaint to the correct transaction and speeds up the resolution process.
Following up with a merchant
If a merchant hasn’t received your payment or a refund is delayed, share the UTR with their support team. They can use it to trace the payment through their payment service provider.
Is It Safe to Share Your UTR Number?
Yes. The UTR identifies a transaction, not your bank account or personal information. It cannot be used to debit money from your account or authorise a payment.
It’s safe to share your UTR with your bank, Paytm support, merchants, or the person involved in the transaction whenever payment verification is required.
However, remember that a UPI PIN and OTP are never required to verify a UTR. If anyone asks you to share your PIN, OTP, or install a screen-sharing app to verify a payment or process a refund, it’s a scam.
For important payments such as rent, security deposits, or high-value purchases, it’s also a good practice to save the payment receipt or note down the UTR. Having it readily available can make payment verification or dispute resolution much quicker if an issue arises later.
