Meaning

A “Sub-Standard Asset” is a non-performing asset (NPA) that has remained so for a period less than or equal to 12 months. It signifies a loan or advance where principal or interest payments are overdue.

Definition

An asset classified as sub-standard has shown payment defaults for over 90 days but not exceeding one year. It carries identifiable credit weaknesses that jeopardize repayment.

Characteristics

These assets often show irregular payments, insufficient cash flows from the borrower, or a weakening financial position of the debtor. They require closer monitoring by financial institutions.

Regulatory Treatment

Banks are required to make provisions for sub-standard assets. Regulatory bodies mandate specific provisioning norms to cover potential losses and maintain financial stability.
