The Delhi government has issued a tender to introduce WhatsApp Business and an API (Application Programming Interface) system for handling challans related to traffic violations. To make challan payment easier and quicker for everyone, Delhi’s transport department will soon start sending e-challans to commercial vehicle owners via WhatsApp.
This new system will automate notifications like e-challans, payment reminders, due date alerts, receipts, and certificates that will further help vehicle owners stay updated on pending payments, promoting better compliance and reducing traffic violations.
Paying traffic challans online through WhatsApp offers several key benefits, including timely reminders. Many vehicle owners experience delays in receiving SMS notifications for challans, but the new E-Challan feature aims to address this issue, helping users avoid strict penalties for delayed payments by notifying them promptly. With around 82 lakh active vehicles in Delhi and 1,000 to 1,500 e-challans issued daily, this AI-based system is expected to improve fine collections. This newly proposed method of paying traffic challan will also improve communication with users as WhatsApp is a platform familiar to millions. Additionally, to ensure inclusivity, notifications will also be sent via SMS and registered email for those not using WhatsApp.
Since WhatsApp is now the most popular messaging platform, the Vehicle Challan Enforcement Department plans to use it as a convenient way to reach people and inform them timely about their traffic challan.
Vehicle owners can pay traffic challan quickly using popular UPI apps and other banking options. This new system simplifies the payment process and ensures timely notifications for challans, helping drivers avoid delays, stay compliant, and manage their payments more conveniently.
