What is Fibre Broadband

Fibre broadband is a type of high-speed internet connection that uses fibre-optic technology to transmit data from the telephone exchange to your area. Fibre optic cables are faster in speed to transfer the data than standard copper wires. Therefore, a fibre broadband connection is faster than DSL, cable and satellite broadband connections.

Unlike the DSL and cable broadband that use copper phone lines or coaxial cables respectively for transferring data, fibre broadband uses fibre-optic cables. Fibre-optic cables use light pulses to transfer the data which is faster than DSL and cable broadband.

By definition, a broadband connection has to provide you with at least 25 Mbps speed. However, with the DSL and Cable broadband, the internet speed you get at your place depends on two factors – the distance between the telephone exchange and your home and the number of users of the broadband service in your area. The greater the distance and the number of users in the area, the slower your broadband speed will be, with the DSL and Cable broadband connection.

FTTC Broadband vs FTTP Broadband

There are two types of fibre broadband connections- FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and FTTP (Fibre to the Premise). In the FTTC broadband, there is an intermediary cabinet situated in your area. The cabinet is connected to the telecom exchange with fibre-optic cables and is connected to your house with copper or coaxial cables.

However, in the FTTP broadband connection, the fibre optic cable runs into your premise itself and is connected to the modem or the router, directly. Therefore, FTTP is a lot faster than the FTTC broadband connection.

How Fast is Fibre Broadband?

The FTTC broadband connection can easily provide up to 30 Mbps, whereas the FTTP broadband connection delivers up to 300 Mbps. However, the speed that you are getting with your broadband connection may depend on several factors, including your selected plan.
