Ensuring the safety of an ATM is crucial for protecting your financial information. While banks employ security measures, a quick check by you can prevent fraud.

Key Safety Checks Before Using an ATM

Inspect the Card Slot:

  • Look for anything unusual attached to or around the card slot. It should be smooth and firmly attached.

  • Give it a gentle tug. Fraudsters often place "skimming" devices here to steal your card data.

Check the Keypad:

  • Ensure the keypad feels normal and is not unusually thick or loose.

  • Cover the keypad with your other hand while entering your PIN to block hidden cameras.

Look for Hidden Cameras:

  • Scan around the screen, above the keypad, and anywhere near the card slot for tiny holes or unusual attachments that could hide cameras.

Examine Surroundings & Machine Condition:

  • Check for any loose wiring or components on the machine itself that seem out of place.

  • Be aware of your surroundings. If the area feels unsafe or deserted, consider using another ATM.

  • Look for signs of tampering (e.g., "Out of Order" signs with tape, mismatched fonts, or unusual messages).

Trust Your Gut Feeling:

  • If anything at all feels suspicious or "off," do not use that ATM. Find another one.

What to Do If You Spot Something Suspicious

  • Do NOT use the ATM.

  • Inform the bank branch immediately (if it's during working hours) or call the bank's customer service number.

  • If you suspect tampering that could harm others, you might also consider informing local law enforcement.

Your vigilance is your best defense against ATM fraud.
