How long is a cheque valid for

In India, a cheque is valid for a period of 3 months from the date of issue. This rule, mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) since April 1, 2012, applies to:
  • Personal and business cheques
  • Demand drafts
  • Pay orders
  • Banker's cheques
Once this three-month period expires, the cheque is considered stale, and banks will no longer honor it. It is advisable to deposit or cash cheques promptly to ensure the funds are cleared before the validity period ends.
