What is the validity of cheque

In India, a cheque is valid for a period of three months from the date of issue. As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines effective from April 1, 2012, banks will not honour cheques, demand drafts, or pay orders presented after this three-month window. Key points to remember:
  • The validity is calculated from the date written on the top-right corner of the cheque.
  • Once this period expires, the instrument is considered a stale cheque and cannot be cashed.
  • To receive payment after expiry, the payee must request the drawer to issue a fresh cheque.
