India now has its first official system to rate how good internet and mobile network connectivity is in buildings and properties. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has approved eight companies as Digital Connectivity Rating Agencies (DCRA) under the “Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity Regulations, 2024.”

These agencies will now check and rate the digital connectivity quality in residential and commercial properties, similar to how buildings get energy efficiency ratings. This will help people buying homes, renting offices, or starting businesses to know beforehand how good the internet and mobile network will be in that location.

What Are Digital Connectivity Rating Agencies?

Digital Connectivity Rating Agencies are specialized companies that assess how well mobile networks, internet services, and other digital communication systems work inside buildings and properties. They will give “Star Ratings” to properties based on their connectivity performance.

The registration was granted on August 27, 2025, and is valid for five years. All agencies must follow the guidelines mentioned in TRAI’s “Manual for Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity” released on August 13, 2025.

Registration Details

  • Validity: The registration is valid for five years, starting from 27 August 2025.
  • Conditions: The agencies must comply with all terms, conditions, and regulations set by TRAI.
  • Assessment Methodology: The DCRAs will carry out their evaluations based on the “Manual for Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity,” which was released on 13 August 2025.

How Will This System Work?

  1. Property Assessment: The approved agencies will visit properties and test various aspects of digital connectivity
  2. Star Rating System: Based on their assessment, they will assign star ratings to properties
  3. Informed Decisions: Property buyers, tenants, and businesses can use these ratings to make better choices
  4. Standardized Method: All agencies must follow the same assessment methodology specified in TRAI’s manual

Why This Matters

With remote work becoming common and digital connectivity being crucial for both personal and business use, knowing the quality of internet and mobile networks in a property has become very important. Previously, people had no reliable way to know this information before buying or renting a property.

This new system will:

  • Support India’s digital transformation goals
  • Help reduce connectivity-related disputes between property owners and buyers/tenants
  • Encourage property developers to improve digital infrastructure
  • Create transparency in the real estate market regarding connectivity quality
FAQs

What exactly will these Digital Connectivity Rating Agencies do?

These agencies will visit properties and test the quality of mobile network coverage, internet speed, and other digital connectivity services. They will then assign star ratings to help people understand how good the connectivity is before they buy or rent a property.

How long is the registration of these agencies valid?

The registration is valid for 5 years, starting from August 27, 2025, and ending on August 26, 2030. The agencies must comply with all TRAI regulations during this period.

Will property owners be required to get their buildings rated?

The current announcement doesn't specify if rating is mandatory for property owners. However, having a good rating will likely become a selling point for properties, encouraging voluntary participation.

What types of properties will be covered under this rating system?

While not explicitly mentioned in the announcement, the system is designed to cover all types of properties including residential homes, commercial buildings, offices, and business premises.

How will consumers benefit from this new rating system?

Consumers can make informed decisions when buying or renting properties by knowing the actual digital connectivity quality beforehand. This will help avoid connectivity-related problems and disputes after moving in, especially important for remote workers and businesses dependent on reliable internet and mobile networks.
