The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released the draft version of the National Industrial Classification (NIC) 2025 and invited comments from stakeholders and the public. This update marks the first revision since NIC-2008 and aligns India’s classification system with the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) Revision 5, adopted by the UN Statistical Commission in 2024.
The NIC is a vital tool used across statistical surveys, censuses, economic research, industrial registrations, and policy-making at both central and state levels. India first introduced its Standard Industrial Classification in 1962, and since then, updates have followed global standards with revisions in 1970, 1987, 1990, 1998, 2004, and 2008.
Why NIC-2025 Was Needed
The revision became necessary due to:
- Global changes: Alignment with ISIC Revision 5.
- Economic transformation in India: Growth of new industries, services, and technologies.
- Emerging sectors: Renewable energy, fintech, digital economy, AYUSH, and e-commerce.
Key Features of NIC-2025
- Draft prepared by an Expert Committee of academicians, economists, industry experts, and associations.
- Extensive consultations with central ministries, departments, and stakeholders.
- Aligned with ISIC Revision 5 up to the 4-digit Class level for global comparability.
- National-level customization at the Sub-Class level.
- Number of Sub-Classes increased to ~1900 (from 1304 in NIC-2008).
- More detail in Health, Finance, Agriculture, Information, and Telecommunications sectors.
- Ensures more accurate tracking and measurement of India’s economy.
