CIF Number: Full Form and Meaning

The full form of CIF is Customer Information File, or Customer Identification File. It refers to a 11-digit number that a bank assigns to all its customers and it is unique for each individual. CIF number comprises of all banking information of the customer, such as account number, personal information like age, date of birth, transaction history, KYC, etc. With the help of this unique, non-transferable number, the bank streamlines the data by storing all information at one place and safeguards customer’s confidential information, preventing fraud and any mishandling.

How to Find a CIF Number?

Several methods can be used to find a CIF Number

  • Bank passbook – CIF number is mentioned on the first page of the passbook. 
  • Bank statement – many banks include CIF number on bank statement, near account details or personal information. 
  • Internet banking – CIF number is generally located in the customer profile or similar section along with all other account information. 
  • Chequebook – CIF number is located on the first page or inside the chequebook
  • Visit the bank branch physically and verify the account details to get the CIF number. 
  • Mobile banking app – CIF number may be located in the profile section of the app. 
  • Customer care – after verifying identity and account number, the executive will provide the CIF number. 

Importance of CIF Number 

CIF number is important as it provides a centralised and secure way to manage customer’s sensitive data. By linking all accounts to a single CIF number, banks maintain accurate and well-organized records that further reduces risks of errors and fraud. Moreover, with the help of CIF number, banks can track the customer’s banking history that further assists when a customer applies for loans or wants to transfer account to another bank branch.
