The Retrieval Reference Number (RRN) is a unique 12-digit identifier generated for every UPI transaction. It acts as a digital fingerprint for your payment, allowing banks and payment providers to track its status precisely.
Important: On the Paytm App, the RRN is labelled as 'UPI Ref No'.
Why is the RRN Important?
- Dispute Resolution: It is the primary number required by banks to investigate failed or pending transactions.
- Refund Verification: It helps in tracking refunds if money was deducted but the receiver didn't get it.
- Security: It serves as unique proof of a specific transaction.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting
1. I cannot find the RRN/UPI Ref No.
- Check History: Ensure you have opened the correct transaction in 'Balance & History'.
- Update App: An outdated app version might cause display issues. Update Paytm from the App Store or Play Store.
2. The RRN is not working for tracking.
- Double Check: Ensure you have entered the 12 digits exactly without typos.
- Alternative: If the RRN fails, you can provide the Transaction ID to customer support to help locate the payment.
3. Are UTR and RRN the same?
- No. UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) is generally used for NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS bank transfers. RRN is used specifically for UPI and Card transactions. However, both serve the same purpose of tracking payments.
