When making UPI payments, you may come across terms like UPI ID, VPA, and UPI handle. These terms are often used interchangeably, which can make it confusing to understand the difference.

In simple terms, UPI ID and VPA are the same for most users. Both refer to the unique payment address used to send and receive money through UPI.

What is VPA in UPI?

A VPA (Virtual Payment Address) is a unique payment address linked to your bank account. It allows you to send and receive UPI payments without sharing your bank account number or IFSC code.

For example, if your UPI ID is priya@ptyes:

  • priya is your unique username.
  • @ptyes is the UPI handle.

Together, they form your VPA or UPI ID, which you can share to receive UPI payments securely.

Is UPI ID the Same as VPA?

Yes, a UPI ID is commonly referred to as a VPA. Your UPI ID works as your Virtual Payment Address and helps identify your account for UPI transactions.

UPI vs VPA: What is the Difference?

  • UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is the payment system that enables instant bank-to-bank transfers.
  • VPA (Virtual Payment Address) or UPI ID is the unique payment address used within the UPI system to send and receive money.

In other words, UPI is the payment network, while VPA or UPI ID is the address used to identify your account.
