What is Dormancy? How do I reactivate my account?

What is Dormancy?

Background: An investor cannot directly buy or sell shares on a stock exchange (such as NSE and BSE). Registered members of a stock exchange are called stock brokers (such as Paytm Money). They open an investor’s trading account in exchanges and trade on the investor’s behalf.

A trading account is a bridge between Demat and a bank account. It is opened with a stock broker such as Paytm Money. When an investor buys a certain number of shares, the first step is to transfer the amount from the bank account to the trading account. After the money is credited, the transaction is initiated.

Similarly, when an investor sells a certain number of shares, the amount of the transaction is credited to the trading account.

What is Dormancy?

If for any reason investor does not operate her trading account for more than a year, then Paytm Money will classify her account as inactive/dormant in NSE/BSE.

If a trading account is tagged as dormant, then also one can still view the shares held, but cannot execute any trade.

Clients who have not traded for 365 days will be notified by email on the 335th day from the day of their last account opening or last trade (whichever is later), alerting them about their status. If a client trades after the notification email, then he/she will be considered as an active client. But if they still do not execute any trade, they will be considered dormant from the 366th day onwards.

How to Reactivate a dormant trading account ?

Dormant client simply has to go to the Paytm Money app and open stocks section. The client will be shown a ‘Complete ReKYC’ button on the stocks home page. On pressing the button, the user will have to simply give a Live photo and e-sign and the account will be reactivated. Kindly note Live photo and e-sign will not be required if the user does ReKYC within 12 months of dormancy and doesn’t modify 6 KYC attributes during ReKYC.
