UPI frauds usually happen when scammers trick users into sharing their UPI PIN, OTP, or approving fraudulent payment requests—not because the UPI system itself is compromised. By following basic safety practices, using Paytm's built-in security features, and reporting suspicious activity immediately, you can protect your account and reduce the risk of financial fraud.
UPI is one of the safest ways to make digital payments. The UPI system itself is protected by multiple security layers, including device binding, encryption, and UPI PIN authentication. In most fraud cases, the system isn’t compromised. Instead, fraudsters trick people into authorising payments, sharing sensitive information, or installing malicious apps.
The good news is that most UPI frauds can be prevented by following a few simple precautions. This guide explains the most common UPI scams, the warning signs to watch for, how to secure your account, and the steps to take immediately if you become a victim.
What Are the Two Golden Rules That Prevent Most UPI Frauds?
Most UPI frauds succeed only when users unknowingly authorise a payment or share confidential information. Following these two rules can help prevent the majority of scams.
Rule 1: Never Enter Your UPI PIN to Receive Money
Your UPI PIN is required only when money is being sent from your account. You never need to enter your PIN to receive money, claim a refund, accept cashback, or verify a payment.
If someone asks you to enter your UPI PIN to receive money, it’s a scam.
Rule 2: Never Share Your UPI PIN or OTP
Your UPI PIN and OTP should never be shared with anyone, not even someone claiming to be from your bank, Paytm, NPCI, or a government agency.
Legitimate organisations will never ask for your PIN or OTP over a phone call, message, email, or screen-sharing session.
What Are the Most Common UPI Frauds?
Fraudsters often use different stories, but many scams follow similar patterns.
Collect Request Scam
A fraudster pretending to be a buyer sends a Collect Request instead of making a payment. They may also ask you to scan a QR code to receive money.
Remember, receiving money never requires entering your UPI PIN. If you’re asked to approve a collect request or enter your PIN to receive a payment, decline the request immediately.
Fake Customer Care Scam
Fraudsters create fake customer care numbers or websites that appear in online searches. After contacting them, victims may be asked to share their PIN, OTP, or install remote-access software.
Always contact customer support through the official Paytm app or your bank’s verified support channels.
Screen-Sharing Scam
Scammers may claim they’re helping with a failed transaction, KYC update, or refund and ask you to install a screen-sharing app.
Once connected, they can observe sensitive information while you access your banking or UPI app.
No legitimate bank or payment app will ever ask you to install remote-access software.
Phishing Links and Fake Apps
Fraudulent SMS, emails, or WhatsApp messages may claim your KYC has expired, your electricity connection will be disconnected, or you’re eligible for a reward or refund.
Avoid clicking unknown links. Instead, open the official Paytm app or your bank’s app directly to verify any alerts or notifications.
Wrong Transfer Scam
A stranger may claim they accidentally transferred money to your account and request that you send it back immediately, often to a different account.
Instead of transferring the money yourself, ask them to contact their bank to initiate the appropriate process. If you’re unsure, contact your own bank before taking any action.
Fake Payment Screenshot Scam
Fraudsters may share edited payment screenshots to claim they’ve completed a payment.
Before handing over goods or services, always verify the payment through your own Paytm transaction history, bank account, or Soundbox notification. Never rely solely on a screenshot.
AutoPay Mandate Scam
Fraudsters may trick users into approving a recurring UPI AutoPay mandate by presenting it as a one-time verification or small payment.
Always review the payment amount, frequency, and validity before approving any mandate. Decline requests you didn’t initiate.
Impersonation Scams
Scammers may pretend to be police officers, government officials, courier companies, or army personnel to create panic or urgency.
If someone pressures you to make an immediate payment or share confidential information, pause and verify the claim independently before taking any action.
How Can You Secure Your UPI Account?
A few good security habits can significantly reduce the risk of fraud.
Lock Your Phone and Paytm App
Use a secure screen lock on your phone and enable biometric authentication or an app lock for Paytm wherever available.
Verify the Recipient Before Paying
Always check the recipient’s name shown on the payment confirmation screen before entering your UPI PIN.
Keep Only the Required Balance
Consider linking your primary UPI ID to an account used for everyday transactions instead of keeping your entire savings in the same account.
Approve Only Requests You Initiate
Decline unexpected collect requests, mandate requests, or payment requests received from unknown individuals.
Keep Your Device Updated
Install updates for your phone and the Paytm app regularly. Download apps only from official app stores and avoid installing unknown APK files.
Protect Your Registered Mobile Number
If your registered SIM suddenly stops working without explanation, contact your mobile operator and bank immediately. Also remember to update or remove old mobile numbers linked to your UPI accounts when changing numbers.
Avoid Sharing Payment Details Publicly
Avoid posting your UPI ID or mobile number publicly on social media or online marketplaces unless necessary.
How Does Paytm Help Keep Your UPI Payments Secure?
Paytm offers multiple security features to help protect your account and make UPI payments safer.
Security Shield
Paytm’s Security Shield adds an extra layer of protection by helping safeguard your account against potential threats and strengthening the security of your UPI transactions.
Secure Login
You can secure the Paytm app using your phone’s screen lock, fingerprint, or Face ID (where supported). This helps prevent unauthorised access if your device is lost or falls into someone else’s hands.
Protection for Sensitive Information
To help protect your privacy, Paytm restricts screenshots and screen recordings on sensitive screens, such as those displaying confidential or transactional information, wherever applicable.
Instant Transaction Alerts
Paytm sends instant notifications for successful UPI payments and other account activities. These alerts help you quickly identify any unauthorised transactions so you can take immediate action.
Transaction History
Paytm maintains a detailed transaction history, making it easy to verify payments, find the UPI Reference Number (UTR), download payment receipts, and report suspicious transactions if required.
In-App Help and Support
If you suspect fraudulent activity or face an issue with a UPI transaction, you can report it directly through the Help section in the Paytm app. This lets you connect with official Paytm Support without relying on customer care numbers found through online searches.
What Should You Do If You Become a Victim of UPI Fraud?
If you suspect you’ve been targeted by a UPI fraud, act immediately. Quick reporting can improve the chances of stopping or recovering the funds.
Step 1: Call 1930
Report the fraud to the National Cyber Crime Helpline by dialling 1930 as soon as possible.
Step 2: Inform Your Bank
Contact your bank immediately to report the unauthorised transaction and request that UPI services or your account be blocked if required.
Step 3: Report the Fraud Online
File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and keep details such as the UTR, transaction amount, screenshots, and complaint reference number ready.
Step 4: Report the Transaction on Paytm
Open the affected transaction in the Paytm app and raise a support request through the Help section.
Step 5: Secure Your Account
If you shared your UPI PIN or installed an unknown app, change your UPI PIN immediately, uninstall suspicious applications, and scan your device for security threats.
Can You Recover Money Lost in a UPI Fraud?
Recovery depends on how the fraud occurred and how quickly you report it.
If the transaction was unauthorised, such as one caused by stolen credentials or account compromise, your bank will handle the case according to the RBI’s customer liability guidelines.
If you authorised the payment yourself after being misled by a fraudster, recovering the money may be more difficult. However, you should still report the fraud immediately through 1930, your bank, and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Early reporting increases the chances of freezing the funds before they’re withdrawn.
Be cautious of anyone claiming they can recover your money in exchange for an upfront fee. Always use official channels for reporting and recovery.
