NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) is the global arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). NPCI started in 2008 with just one payment product and has now created many innovative digital payment solutions used across India. Seeing its success in the domestic market, NPCI decided to expand globally and bring Indian payment systems like RuPay and UPI to the world.
Why NIPL Was Created
To make this vision possible, NPCI formed a new company—NIPL—on April 3, 2020. This subsidiary focuses only on expanding RuPay (India’s card payment system) and UPI (Unified Payments Interface) to other countries. The aim is to help Indian travelers pay easily and securely when they are abroad and to support other countries in developing their own modern payment systems.
NIPL’s Global Partnerships
NIPL works with several international organizations and financial networks to build a strong global acceptance network. This means Indian users can use RuPay and UPI at more locations worldwide, making travel payments simpler and safer.
Benefits for Indian Travelers
- Pay Abroad Like at Home – Use RuPay cards or UPI apps for payments in partner countries.
- Safe and Secure – Transactions are encrypted and follow strict security standards.
- Cost-Effective – Avoid high foreign transaction fees by using familiar payment systems.
Helping Other Countries
Many countries want to set up their own real-time payment systems or domestic card networks. NIPL offers:
- Licensing – Letting them use India’s proven payment technology.
- Consulting – Guiding them on how to launch and manage payment systems.
- Technical Assistance – Providing infrastructure and know-how to make payments faster and safer.
Vision for the Future
NIPL’s mission is to transform payments worldwide by using technology and innovation. It aims to make payments easier for Indian travelers and help countries without strong financial infrastructure improve their systems.
