- Applies to employees who joined between April 1, 2025, and August 31, 2025.
- Employees must apply by 30 September 2025.
- UPS provides more flexibility with the option to return to NPS later.
- Deadline is same for all eligible employees and past retirees under NPS.
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has announced an extension of the one-time option for Central Government employees to switch from the National Pension System (NPS) to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS).
As per the Ministry of Finance Notification (F. No. FX-1/3/2024 PR dated 24.01.2025), the UPS was introduced earlier this year. Following further clarifications, the government has now allowed employees who joined services between 1 April 2025 and 31 August 2025, and who had already opted for NPS, to migrate to the UPS.
Employees falling under this category must exercise this option on or before 30 September 2025, which is the same cut-off date prescribed for other eligible groups under UPS.
The initiative is designed to ensure that Central Government employees can make an informed choice regarding their post-retirement financial security. Importantly, even after choosing UPS, employees retain the freedom to switch back to NPS later if they wish.
It is also noted that the final deadline for all eligible employees and past retirees under NPS to opt for UPS remains 30 September 2025.
