In a major step toward building safer and more trustworthy AI systems in India, IndiaAI, under the Ministry of Electronics & IT, has announced the selection of five cutting-edge projects for its “Safe & Trusted AI” initiative.

The projects were chosen through a competitive Expression of Interest (EoI) process launched on 10 December 2024, which drew over 400 submissions from academic institutions, startups, research bodies, and civil society organisations. A multi-stakeholder technical committee evaluated these proposals, ultimately choosing five that span critical AI safety themes.

Selected Projects & Focus Areas

These projects, collectively, are intended to fortify India’s AI ecosystem by targeting vulnerabilities (e.g. deepfake detection), improving fairness (bias audits), and enabling robust evaluation and testing of generative AI models.

Why This Matters

As AI becomes more pervasive and capable, the risks of misuse—for example, via manipulated media or biased decision-making—rise sharply. The initiative by IndiaAI is a strategic endeavour to embed safety, transparency, and accountability into the AI systems developed and deployed in India.

By supporting indigenous research and development across academia, industry, and civil society, India aims to reduce dependence on external technologies, adapt solutions to its socio-technical context, and promote responsible AI adoption across sectors.

IndiaAI: Making AI Work for Everyone

IndiaAI is a special group under the government (MeitY) that’s in charge of making sure India’s big plan for Artificial Intelligence (AI) happens.

Their main goals are:

  • Share AI with everyone: Make sure everyone in India, no matter who they are, can benefit from AI.
  • Make India a top AI leader: Help India become really good at AI on the world stage.
  • Build our own AI tools: Develop AI technology right here in India, so we don’t have to rely on others.
  • Use AI wisely and fairly: Make sure AI is used in a way that’s good, fair, and responsible for everyone.

Basically, IndiaAI is working to bring the power of AI to all of India, making sure it’s used smartly and ethically for a better future.

FAQs
