The Department of Posts (DoP), under the Ministry of Communications, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MapmyIndia – Mappls, a leading provider of location technology, IoT, and geospatial solutions. The collaboration aims to strengthen India’s Digital Addressing System (DIGIPIN) and expand its adoption nationwide.
The MoU was signed at Dak Bhawan, New Delhi, by representatives of both organizations.
What is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN stands for Digital Pincode, a system being developed by the Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications.
It is a unique, digital code linked to a specific geographic location or address. Unlike traditional PIN codes that cover larger areas, a DIGIPIN provides much more precise location information — down to an individual address or point on the map.
What the Partnership Covers
- Base Maps Integration: MapmyIndia will provide base maps for integration into the Know Your DIGIPIN application. This will make it easier for users to generate accurate DIGIPINs based on their exact geographical location.
- DIGIPIN in Mappls App: The functionality will also be added to the Mappls application, enabling users to search for and navigate to locations using DIGIPIN.
- Database-Linked DIGIPINs: MapmyIndia will help allocate DIGIPINs to addresses already available in its database, boosting adoption across platforms.
- Ecosystem Development: Enterprises, government agencies, and developers will be able to integrate DIGIPIN into their mapping platforms and solutions, fostering new services and innovations.
“This partnership will significantly enhance DIGIPIN’s reach and accessibility. By integrating with MapmyIndia’s platform, we are creating a standardized digital addressing system that benefits millions of citizens and strengthens India’s digital infrastructure,” said Shri Harpreet Singh, Member (Operations), DoP.
“MapmyIndia Mappls is proud to join hands with The Department of Posts to develop a fully indigenous National Digital Addressing System. The MapmyIndia Mappls suite of APIs and SDKs once integrated into the Department of Posts’ DIGIPIN applications will empower billions of Indian citizens and businesses,” said Shri Rakesh Verma, Co-founder & CMD, MapmyIndia Mappls.
The partnership supports the Digital Address Code initiative and lays the foundation for Address as a Service (AaaS) in India. It ensures efficient service delivery, simplifies navigation, and helps create innovative solutions around the digital address system.
