The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is advancing its push for cashless travel by installing static UPI QR codes in 75% of its buses. This initiative is expected to make digital payments more accessible while reducing dependency on cash transactions.
In addition, dynamic UPI QR codes are being rolled out at major depots such as Shanthinagar, Peenya, and Subashnagar. According to BMTC officials, UPI transactions currently account for 20% of daily ticket revenue, amounting to approximately ₹60 lakh daily.
“The response from commuters has been encouraging. Digital payments not only streamline the ticketing process but also ensure greater transparency,” said a senior BMTC official.
How the System Works
Passengers can easily spot QR code posters on the side panels of many buses. Once a payment is made using UPI, the conductor issues a ticket to confirm the transaction.
While the initiative has been well-received, commuters have suggested enhancements:
- Expanding the installation of QR codes to all buses to improve convenience for passengers and conductors.
- Providing conductors with QR code scanner cards for easier accessibility, especially in crowded buses.
- Promoting the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for a more seamless and unified travel experience.
KSRTC Joins the Cashless Movement
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has also embraced cashless payments, starting November 2024. The KSRTC has introduced over 10,000 advanced Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) across its fleet of 8,800 buses, further simplifying travel for its passengers.
