Meaning

Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) are government-backed securities that provide an alternative to holding physical gold.

Definition

Issued by the Reserve Bank of India for the Government, SGBs are denominated in grams of gold. Investors buy and redeem them in cash, linked to gold’s market price.

Key Features

They offer a fixed interest rate (e.g., 2.50% p.a.) on the initial investment. The principal value fluctuates with gold prices, providing price protection without physical possession.

Benefits for Investors

Investors earn potential gold price appreciation and fixed interest. SGBs eliminate storage issues, purity concerns, and GST on physical gold.
