What is a Service Charge?
Service charge refers to a fee added to the cost of a primary product or service to cover the cost of additional services provided to customers, including administrative and processing costs. Also referred to as service fees, this charge is added to the cost during the transaction between the consumer and the company. Service charge is collected in various industries such as hotels, restaurants, banking, travel, and security.
Types of Service Charge
Hospitality Service Charge: Service charges are applied in hotels and restaurants to cover the cost of additional services. Fee added to your bill at a restaurant, often as a percentage of the total amount. It is intended to cover the cost of service provided by the waitstaff. Amount commonly ranges from 10% to 20% of the total bill. A fee is applied to hotel bills to cover services such as housekeeping, room service, and concierge assistance.
Banking Industry: In the banking industry, various service charges are applied, usually at a flat or standard rate. When you open a checking or savings account, banks typically charge a monthly maintenance fee. This fee is automatically deducted from your account at the end of each month. Additionally, banks impose service charges for using ATMs of other banks or for initiating wire transfers.
Travel Industry: Airlines impose various service charges for additional services. These charges include fees for checked or oversized baggage, changing or canceling a flight, selecting seats in advance, and inflight amenities such as WiFi, food, beverages, and entertainment. An Airport Improvement fee applied to departing and connecting passengers at the airport. This fee is typically charged by the government or airport management corporation to fund major airport upgrades and service expansions.
Residential Property: When renting or leasing certain types of residential properties, a service charge may be added to the monthly rent. For instance, tenants in condominium units often pay an additional condo fee on top of their rent. Online rental platforms like Airbnb charge service fees to cover the costs associated with processing reservations.
Although both service charges and tips are given for additional service, they are significantly different. Service charge refers to a mandatory fee added to the bill for services provided. It is usually included automatically and cannot be altered by the customer, such as banquet event fees, hotel room charges, bottle charges, package fees, etc. Whereas, a tip is usually a voluntary amount given by a customer who is satisfied with the service and wants to reward the service provider, such as cash given to a waiter or taxi driver, electronic tips added through payment systems, etc.
