RTGS Full Form & its Meaning

The full form of RTGS is Real-Time Gross Settlement. RTGS is a payment system that allows instant and secure fund transfers from one bank account to another. It’s commonly used for high-value transactions because each transfer is processed individually and in real-time, not in batches. You can use RTGS to pay for debit or credit card bills, either online or by visiting your bank branch. Both retail and corporate account holders use it for instant transfers.

How Does RTGS Work in Banking?

  • Initiation: The RTGS process begins when the sender enters the receiver’s bank details, account number, and transfer amount.
  • Verification: The bank checks if the sender’s account has enough balance for the transfer.
  • Central Bank Involvement: The central bank is notified to act as an intermediary between the two banks.
  • Real-Time Transfer: The central bank verifies the funds and transfers them instantly to the receiver’s bank, usually within seconds or minutes.
  • Notification to Receiver’s Bank: The central bank informs the receiver’s bank about the incoming funds.
  • Completion: The receiver’s bank credits the account, and both sender and receiver receive a confirmation message.

What are the Benefits of RTGS?

  • Low Fraud Risk: RTGS transactions are final and cannot be changed, reducing fraud risk and increasing confidence.
  • Speed and Efficiency: RTGS enables immediate fund transfers, ideal for urgent transactions and boosting economic efficiency.
  • Better Liquidity Management: Banks can manage funds more effectively with real-time cash positions.
  • Reduced Settlement Risk: With real-time settlement, RTGS lowers the risk of payment default.
  • Regulated Transaction Charges: RBI caps transaction charges, so costs are transparent.
  • Faster Settlement: RTGS speeds up money circulation by settling transactions quickly.
  • Transparency: Real-time data increases transparency and regulatory oversight.
  • Operational Six Days a Week: Available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, excluding 2nd and 4th Saturdays.
