Liquified Petroleum Gas or LPG is a fuel that is mainly composed of Propane (C3H8), Butane (C4H10) or with a mixture of both in a fixed proportion. It is commonly used for cooking or heating since it is a flammable hydrocarbon gas that is liquified through pressurization which makes it easier to transport and store as compared to its gaseous form.

Uses of LPG

  • Cooking: LPG is widely used for domestic as well as commercial cooking. It provides an efficient amount of energy source for cooking applications such as the stove.
  • Heating: LPG is used for space as well as water heating in both the residential and industrial areas.
  • Automotive fuel: In some countries, LPG systems are installed in vehicles, which can run on either gasoline or LPG. The drivers can choose amongst the two according to the availability and cost.
  • Cooling property: LPG is highly versatile and is also used in electronic applications such as refrigerator and air conditioning.
  • Agriculture: Potatoes, Wheat, Onion, Maize and many other crops can be dried efficiently by LPG.

Safety Considerations for LPG

A cautious handling of the LPG gas is required due to its flammable properties:

  • Always use properly designed containers that ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Keep a regular check on leakage. If you notice any foul smell (Sulphur-like smell) make sure you contact the concerned person immediately.
  • Do not smoke near a LPG container since it is flammable and could ignite with just a little spark.
  • Make sure the cylinder or tanks containing LPG are in upright position while transporting them.
  • For residential use, do not try to install LPG cylinders by yourself. Contact a professional to ensure high safety.
  • Make sure you turn off the LPG appliance, whenever not in use.
  •  All the LPG companies provide a unique helpline number in case of any leakage or other concerns regarding LPG. One should always call on that toll free number for assistance, in case of emergency.

LPG is colorless and odorless fuel that has diversified uses in the domestic, commercial, agricultural, automotive and industrial sector. It is essential for all the industries and consumers to understand LPG to the core for sustainable use of the resource.
