Understanding Conveyance Allowance

Conveyance allowance refers to the monetary benefits provided by an organization to their employees to cover the commute cost from home to office or traveling anywhere related to work. Along with several other benefits, many organizations provide this benefit as well to support the employees and provide higher job satisfaction. 

Conveyance allowance is credited as a part of the salary holding all the official commute expenses. The eligibility criteria is simple, anyone who is traveling by their own for official purposes shall be paid with a conveyance allowance

Conveyance Allowance Exemption Under Income Tax

As per Income Tax Act Section 10(14)II, conveyance allowance is allowed for all salaries employees. The entire allowance or the actual expenditure incurred for official purpose, whichever is less shall be exempted. The allowance may vary as per the organization, but the exemption remains standard.

  • For salaried people the current exemption is Rs. 1600 per month or Rs. 19,200 per year.  
  • Exemption limit for visually impaired or orthopedically handicapped individuals is Rs. 3200 per month.
  • Also as per section 10 (45) of the income tax act, the UPSC members are exempted to pay any tax over the conveyance allowance.
