Is UPI under government?

UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, is owned and operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). NPCI was formed to integrate and unify all retail payment mechanisms in India under the guidance of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Indian government has also backed the system and provided institutional support for its adoption.
