How to calculate custom duty

To calculate customs duty in India, follow these steps:
  • Determine the Assessable Value (AV) of the goods, which is the CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight) converted to Indian Rupees (₹).
  • Identify the HSN Code to find the applicable Basic Customs Duty (BCD) rate and multiply it by the AV.
  • Calculate the Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS), usually 10% of the BCD.
  • Find the Integrated GST (IGST) by applying the GST rate to the sum of AV, BCD, and SWS.
  • Total Customs Duty = BCD + SWS + IGST + any applicable cess.
