You can deactivate a PAN card—formally known as surrendering or cancelling it—through both online and offline methods, primarily when you hold a duplicate card.
- Online: Apply through the NSDL/Protean website using the 'Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data' form, mentioning the duplicate PAN you wish to cancel.
- Offline: Submit the PAN correction form (Form 49A) at a local PAN centre, or write a formal letter to your Assessing Officer explaining the reason for cancellation.
It is mandatory to surrender extra PAN cards to avoid legal penalties under the Income Tax Act.
