A cheque number is a unique six-digit identifier assigned to every leaf in a cheque book. In India, it is primarily found at the bottom-left corner of the cheque leaf, printed in a specialized magnetic ink font. Its main purposes include:
- Tracking the status of a specific payment or transaction.
- Maintaining accurate records in a cheque register or passbook.
- Assisting the bank in identifying and clearing the specific instrument.
- Facilitating the process of stopping or cancelling a payment if a leaf is lost or stolen.
