Is pan mandatory for bank account

A PAN card is generally mandatory for opening a regular bank account in India. However, there are exceptions for certain account types:
  • Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts (BSBDA) and small accounts can be opened without a PAN card by submitting Form 60 or alternative identity proof like Aadhaar.
  • Accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) do not require a PAN card.
While not always required for opening an account, a PAN is compulsory for high-value transactions, such as cash deposits exceeding ₹50,000 in a single day.
