Does a bank account expire?

A bank account does not have a specific expiry date like a debit card, but it can become inactive or dormant if not used. As per RBI guidelines, if there are no customer-induced transactions for over two years, the account is classified as inoperative or dormant. To keep your account active, ensure you perform at least one transaction, such as a deposit or withdrawal, every two years. If an account remains unclaimed for over ten years, the funds are transferred to the RBI’s Depositor Education and Awareness Fund.
