What is the difference between UPI number and UPI ID?

A UPI ID is a virtual payment address (VPA), such as name@bank, used for fund transfers. It is customizable and unique. A UPI Number, however, is generally a bank-verified mobile number or a numeric alias linked to your UPI account. While both identify your account, the UPI Number often serves as a bank-verified identifier of your UPI ID.
