To remove a 'written off' status from your credit report, you must resolve the underlying debt. You can either pay the full outstanding balance to achieve a 'Closed' status or settle for a partial amount, which results in a 'Settled' status.
- Contact your bank/NBFC to repay or settle the debt.
- Obtain a No Dues Certificate or settlement letter as proof.
- Ask the lender to update the credit bureaus to reflect the new status.
- If the status isn't updated within 30-45 days, file a dispute with the credit bureau, attaching your proof.
An accurate written-off status can legally remain on your report for up to seven years.
