Paying your credit card bill on time is one of the most important habits for maintaining a healthy CIBIL score. Your payment history contributes nearly 35% to your credit score, which means even a single missed payment can lower your score significantly and remain on your credit report for up to 36 months.
Late payments can also become expensive very quickly. Most banks charge late payment fees ranging from ₹100 to ₹1,300, depending on the outstanding amount. On top of that, unpaid balances usually attract interest charges of around 2.5–3.5% per month, making credit cards one of the costliest forms of borrowing if dues are not cleared on time.
Missing payments continuously may lead to reduced credit limits, higher interest rates, or recovery actions from the card issuer. In contrast, regular on-time payments help improve your credit profile, increase your chances of getting higher credit limits, and make it easier to qualify for loans or premium financial products in the future.
Suppose your outstanding credit card bill is ₹50,000 and you pay only the minimum due while the remaining balance continues at 3% monthly interest. In that case, you could end up paying nearly ₹18,000 or more in interest charges alone over a year.
Whenever possible, try to pay the full outstanding amount before the due date to avoid unnecessary interest and debt buildup.
Enter your card number and Paytm auto-fetches your outstanding amount, minimum due, and due date in seconds.

A credit card billing cycle is the monthly period, usually 28 to 31 days, during which all your transactions are recorded. At the end of each cycle, your bank generates a statement listing all purchases, cash advances, fees, and the total amount owed.
Once the statement is generated, you get a grace period of 20 to 25 days to pay the full amount with no interest charged. If you clear the full outstanding within this window, your credit card effectively works as a free short-term loan.
If you cannot pay in full, you must pay at least the minimum due, typically 5% of the outstanding balance or Rs. 200, whichever is higher, before the due date to avoid late fees. Keep in mind that interest will be charged on the remaining balance from the date of each transaction. There is no grace period on amounts carried forward.

Set a reminder 3 days before the due date. Paying early accounts for processing time and protects you from late payment charges

Paying only the minimum due triggers 30 to 42% annual interest on the remaining balance. Clear the full outstanding whenever possible.

Using more than 30% of your credit limit hurts your CIBIL score. Make a part payment mid-month if your spending runs high.

Set up auto-debit for at least the minimum due as a safety net. You can still clear the full amount manually before the due date.
A credit card bill is a monthly statement issued by your credit card provider that summarizes all transactions made during the billing cycle. It includes your total outstanding balance, minimum amount due, payment due date, and a detailed breakdown of purchases, fees, and other charges. Paying your bill on time helps you avoid late fees and interest charges while maintaining a healthy credit score.
When you pay a credit card bill, the payment is routed to your card issuer through a secure bill payment network such as BBPS.
