Shanker Ramakrishnan's Rani is the story of women taking their destinies into their own hands. A watchable film which could have been much much better if the screen play as well as the dialogues were worked on. The slow pace and the predictability towards the end takes the fun out. The film's plot revolves around the investigation of the murder of a politician, Dharmarajan (Guru Somasundaram). Urvashi plays the role of his sister Sheela, while Anumol, Mala Parvathy, Honey Rose and Bhavana appear in equally important roles. The murder investigation is helmed by a retired cop, Bhasi, played by Indrans. How he unravels the big mystery, who is the murderer and, more importantly, who is the mastermind, forms the crux of the movie. Tamil actor Niyathi Kadambi is the real show stealer with her brilliant performance in the titular role of Rani, a domestic help at Dharmarajan's house who is the prime suspect in the murder case. Guru Somasundaram was a good choice to play the villainous Dharmarajan. However, the poor casting choices in certain scenes he is in takes away from the seriousness of his performance. The film is rather straightforward in its plot and there is a lot of foreshadowing from the beginning, intentional or not. The suspense could have been delivered better. The songs were easy to enjoy, especially since they were rooted in the essence of folk songs. Mena Melath has done a good job. The dubbing was poorly done. In a scene featuring police officers in the beginning, it's obvious. There is an intensity that the writer wanted most of the characters to have but it ended up doing nothing for the plot or the film in general.Read more
