After establishing himself as one of the biggest Punjabi singers, Gippy made his acting debut in 2010 with the movie Mel Karade Rabba. Director Pankaj Batra has helmed many movies in the past like ‘Jinde Meriye’ and more, but unlike those, the strength of this film is the writing by Rakesh Dhawan. ‘Mitran Da Naa Chalda’ speaks without stuttering about India's strong stance on women's protection. The narrative delivers a strong message to the audience while maintaining a perfect balance of humour and drama, which works in the film's favour. Batra, who also serves as the film's producer, has chosen his subject and actors wisely, which adds to the overall impact of the drama.
‘Mitran Da Naa Chalda’ starts off light-heartedly with Laadi's (Gippy Grewal) childhood. He dropped out of school in his early years, embarrassed by his stammering, and began working for his mamaji (Hardip Gill), a lawyer by profession. Following that, the story smoothly shifts gears, and we are introduced to four young girls—Binder (Tania), Karam (Raj Shoker), Heena (Renu Kaushal), Aarchi (Aarchi Sachdeva)—who are living together as paying guests (PG) in Chandigarh. What brings them together is the need to support their families while struggling to make ends meet, as well as the sexual harassment they face at work. But everything changes when they become suspects in a murder investigation. This 118-minute drama reveals the real story behind it all.
In terms of acting, Gippy Grewal excels as a simpleton and has a strong hold on his Laadi persona. Don't let his plain check shirts and casual pants fool you, though; he is capable of much more. Await his climactic speech, while unlikely to be particularly persuasive, will undoubtedly be well received.
Tania, Raj Shoker, Renu Kaushal, and Aarchi Sachdeva all played their parts convincingly and elicited sympathy for their respective characters. Gippy and Tania's love story had the potential to blossom, but it becomes jaded in the midst of the heated turmoil. Shweta Tiwari, who plays opposition lawyer Indu Mittal, also makes an impression in her limited screen time. With their "tu tu main main," PG owners saas-bahu, played by Nirmal Rishi and Anita Devgan, up the humour factor. And there will be many laugh-out-loud moments whenever the duo appears on the screen.
Songs in Pollywood elevate the film to another level; however, they were dropped at the wrong times in this film and do not complement the story, but rather add to its length.
Even though the humour does not interfere with the flow of events and the character arcs are well-developed, it would have been wiser to approach such a subject with more zeal. Despite this, 'Mitran Da Naa Chalda' is a pure entertainer with a socially relevant message, making it a must-watch.
