Upcoming Horror Movies Based on Stephen King’s Novel

Best known for starring in thrillers, Bill Skarsgård is a Swedish actor who rose to fame with his roles in Stephen King adaptations like the Castle Rock series and the It film franchise. He made his debut with the 2000 thriller film White Water Fury and went on to act in movies like Anna Karenina, Atomic Blonde and Battlecreek. He has won several awards and nominations for his work.

Jessica Chastain is an American actress and film producer. Listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2012, Chastain has earned several awards and accolades for her performances in films and TV. She made her debut with the 2008 drama Jolene. Since then, she has been credited with the portrayal of strong-willed women in films that have a feminist theme. Some of her most acclaimed films include The Help, Interstellar, Miss Sloane and Molly’s Game. She has received nominations for prestigious awards and won several including the Golden Globe.

James McAvoy is an award-winning Scottish actor who made his debut with The Near Room in 1995. Active in film, TV as well as on stage, he has also voiced significant characters in animated films like Gnomeo & Juliet and Arthur Christmas. McAvoy is a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and acted as a member of PACE youth theater before entering films. His most notable performances have been in movies like Atonement, X-Men: First Class, Split, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Filth.

‘IT Chapter Two’ opens with a chilling crime scene in the sleepy American suburb of Derry that sets the stage for an action packed confrontation. Director Andy Muschietti and writer Gary Dauberman show us glimpses of the present-day situation of the members of the Losers Club. Except Mike (Isaiah Mustafa), who stayed back in Derry as the town librarian, all others have moved on to life in the city. They have struggled to put the past behind them until a phone call from Mike brings them back to where it all started.

The film travels seamlessly between the past and the present, but for those who haven’t caught the original, connecting the dots might be difficult. That said, the flashback scenes featuring the young cast are undoubtedly the best. These scenes successfully merge terror and humour, such that you’re left wanting for more. This is mainly due to the top-notch performances by the young actors, each with distinct character sketches. Among the older lot, Jessica Chastain as Bev and James McAvoy as Bill are most impressive. The rest of the cast performs well, but in comparison with their childhood counterparts, their chemistry feels severely lacking.

Meanwhile, the film’s antagonist Bill Skarsgård as the clown and its many forms is at his devilish best and never fails to send a chill down your spine. His scenes with the children are the most terrifying. The film constantly throws up jumpscares, some of them predictable yet scary. A bulk of the screenplay has a horror-house like feel, with remarkable special effects. However, some of the conflicts come off as repetitive as the film often tries to give the message of confronting the demons within, and overcoming our own fears. It does so with a highly graphic imagery that builds tension and terror at regular intervals. To sum 'It' up, there's a lot going on in this sequel that manages to engage you despite a complex narrative and an exhausting runtime of little less than three hours.

It Chapter 2 is another example of how filmmakers lose grip on the story in the sequel. The small but highly violent town of Derry revisits its past and finds that the old was indeed gold and the return of its heroes after 27 years does more harm than good to the nostalgia attached to it. Mike, one of the members of the Loser Club, calls all his friends back to Derry as strange things have started to take place, which may mark the return of Pennywise The Clown. Bound by their childhood oath, they all return to find that the town hasn’t moved on much, but it seems only they are concerned about its past and what it could bring in future. The police, too, is conspicuously absent in most parts. That also means, the grown up boys—Billy, Ben, Richie, Mike and Eddie—and the traumatised girl Beverly, are supposed to fight Pennywise’s mindgames without losing their soul, quite literally. After a tone-setting opening sequence, everyone forgets that they need to rush to the center of the problem and find a way to contain the clown. They just keep delving in their past which turns out to be more interesting than the present, even on second viewing. Unlike the original, Chapter 2 is a drag with more focus on cringe horror than psychedelic effects. For instance, when Mike calls his friends in different cities, they either spill their coffee or just bang their car. It’s funny, not scary. The set-up for the arrival of Pennywise has been planned so many times in the film that you stop caring whether he will eat the hand or the heart. A couple of scenes are set terrifically, one of them featuring Beverly visiting her old house, but they all lose steam before making you uncomfortable in the seat. Like compassion, Derry seems to have lost its appetite for a gripping thriller too. It’s not psychological anymore. But the biggest problem creeps in towards the end when it transforms into those old Ramsay Brothers films where you need to keep chanting and believing in yourself. It’s tiring, to put it mildly.   The metaphors, which made the first chapter engrossing, are also gone. Instead, some bizarre theories about the original inhabitants of the place have been introduced. They simply fatigue you out. Everyone, including otherwise delightful James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain, have not gotten their A-game on. They lost touch with Stephan King’s premise and the film.
