Your teenager pays for lunch at the school canteen, splits a cab fare with friends, or buys a mobile recharge and every single time, they either borrow your phone, send you QR code on WhatsApp to pay, ask for your OTP, or wait for cash. It works, but it is not a system built for how teenagers actually move through their day.
Paytm Pocket Money changes this. Once a parent activates it, teenagers can make UPI payments on their own device, directly from the parent’s linked bank account, without needing a separate bank account of their own. This article covers exactly how to use Paytm Pocket Money for both online and offline payments, once the feature is set up.
What is Paytm Pocket Money?
Paytm Pocket Money is a feature on the Paytm app that enables teenagers to make UPI payments without opening a separate bank account.
It works on NPCI’s UPI Circle framework. A parent or trusted family member authorises the teenager to make payments directly from their linked bank account, with a defined monthly spending limit and real-time visibility on every transaction. Teenagers can pay across millions of online and offline merchants using their own phone, without depending on cash, borrowing a parent’s device, or asking for OTPs.
How to Activate Paytm Pocket Money?
Before a teenager can make any payment, the parent or trusted family member must complete a one-time setup. This takes less than two minutes.
Step 1: Update the Paytm app to the latest version from the App Store or Play Store.
Step 2: Open the Paytm app and tap on ‘To Pay Anyone’, or type “Pocket Money” in the search bar.
Step 3: On the next screen, tap on ‘Pocket Money’ to begin setup.
Step 4: Choose the relationship type, either Spouse, Child or Sibling, and tap on ‘Set Up Pocket Money’.
Step 5: Step 5: Select the teenager’s contact from the list or scan their QR code available in the Pocket Money section of their Paytm app, enter their Aadhaar number, and tap Confirm to proceed.
Step 6: Set a monthly spending limit by choosing from the available options or entering a custom amount. The limit ranges from ₹100 to ₹15,000.
Step 7: Select your primary bank account and enter your Paytm UPI PIN to complete the setup.
Step 8: The teenager will receive an invitation on their Paytm app. They must accept the invitation within 30 minutes to activate Paytm Pocket Money on their device.
Once the teenager accepts the invitation, they are ready to make payments independently.
Note: If the ‘Pocket Money’ option is not visible, update the Paytm app to the latest version from the App Store or Play Store and reopen the app.
How Teenagers Can Use Paytm Pocket Money for Offline Payments?
Offline payments are the most common use case for Paytm Pocket Money. School canteens, stationery shops, grocery stores, local cafes, medical stores, and any merchant with a Paytm QR code can be paid using Pocket Money.
The teenager opens the Paytm app on their own device, scans the merchant’s QR code, enters the payment amount, and completes the transaction using their Paytm UPI PIN. The amount is debited from the parent’s linked bank account, within the monthly limit that the parent has set.
There is no need to borrow the parent’s phone or share any OTP. The teenager handles the full payment flow independently.
How Teenagers Can Use Paytm Pocket Money for Online Payments?
For online payments, teenagers can use Paytm as their UPI payment method at checkout on any platform that accepts UPI. When a payment request is raised, the teenager authorises it through the Paytm app on their device using their UPI PIN. The amount is deducted from the parent’s linked bank account, subject to the monthly spending limit.
This covers a wide range of everyday online use cases, including mobile recharges, app purchases, food delivery, ticket bookings, and subscription payments, across any merchant that accepts Paytm UPI.
Spending Limits and Safety Controls
Paytm Pocket Money is designed with layered safety controls so parents stay in full control of how much is spent and when.
| Safety Control | Limit or Restriction |
|---|---|
| First 30 minutes after setup | Maximum aggregate spending capped at ₹500 |
| First 24 hours | Spending limit capped at ₹5,000 |
| Per-transaction limit | Payments capped at ₹5,000 per transaction |
| Monthly UPI limit | Capped at ₹15,000 across the entire active UPI network |
| Device security | A device lock is mandatory |
| Restricted services | International payments and cash withdrawals are not permitted |
| Parent controls | Spending limits can be modified anytime; access can be revoked instantly using the bank PIN |
The monthly spending limit is set by the parent during activation and can be updated at any time from their Paytm account. If a parent needs to pause or stop access entirely, they can revoke it instantly using their Paytm UPI PIN, without having to contact support or go through any additional steps.
How Parents Can Track Every Payment?
One of the core features of Paytm Pocket Money is that it does not ask parents to trust blindly. Every payment made by the teenager is visible to the parent in real time.
With Paytm Spend Summary, each transaction is automatically categorised across categories like food, travel, shopping, and mobile recharges. This gives families a clear picture of where the money is going, without having to ask the teenager for a breakdown at the end of the month. It also builds a foundation for teenagers to develop disciplined spending habits over time, since every rupee spent is tracked and visible.
