Is FASTag Mandatory?

If you own a four-wheeler and do not have a FASTag yet, it is important to note that you will be required to pay double the toll tax at every toll plaza on the Indian national highway. This mandatory requirement was implemented by the Indian government on 16th February 2021. The purpose behind this mandate is to encourage digital fee payment, reduce waiting time for travellers, minimize fuel consumption, and ensure a smooth passage across the national highway network.

According to the road transport and highway ministry, all lanes in toll plazas have been designated as ‘FASTag lanes’ since midnight on 15th-16th February 2021. Therefore, any vehicle entering these lanes without a FASTag or with an invalid FASTag will be liable to pay twice the applicable fee at the toll plaza. It is essential to adhere to this regulation to avoid any inconvenience or extra charges while travelling on the national highway.
